“I am honored and excited to be at the helm of the Stockholm Environment Institute as we embark on the preparation of new long-term strategy,” said Nilsson. “I will continue to build on and continuously improve SEI’s niche – supporting capacity development, policy and decision-making through developing science-based knowledge in partnerships.”

Måns joined SEI in 1995, and is also part time Professor of the Practice of Environmental Strategies and Policy Analysis at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). As Research Director he oversaw SEI’s global research leadership and has fostered the development of its strategic initiatives and its academic cooperation agreements. In recent years he helped establish the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate and has been closely involved as an advisor to the UN, OECD and the European Commission on the Sustainable Development Goals.

“The coming years will require adapting our skills and tools, and exploring solutions to new and changing sustainability challenges,” continued Nilsson. “Having been part of this fantastic institute for over 20 years, I am very confident about our ability to do so. My leadership will therefore focus on empowering and unleashing the creative and innovative forces of our fantastic colleagues world-wide, while ensuring stability, efficiency and accountability in all our operations.”

“I am extremely satisfied that Måns Nilsson will be the new Executive Director of SEI,” said Kerstin Niblaeus, chair of the SEI Board. “He has extensive experience of building bridges between science and policy, and has gained international recognition for his research. I know that his heart is with SEI and I am convinced that he will be an excellent leader.”
