The index is based on an assessment of more than 6,500 think tanks, and is published in the 2013 Global Go To Think Tank Report, compiled annually by the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program.

SEI Executive Director Johan Kuylenstierna said, ”I am of course very pleased about SEI’s ranking in this index, as this is a recognition of the high quality work done by all SEI colleagues across the organization. But a key part of our success is the strong collaboration we have with hundreds of science and policy partners globally – this is not something we could achieve alone.”

The Global Go To Think Tank Index is the result of an international survey of over 1,950 scholars, public and private donors, policy-makers and journalists who helped rank more than 6,500 organizations. The report states that it aims to improve the profile and performance of think tanks by recognizing those that are world leaders, and to “highlight the important contribution that think tanks make to governments and civil societies around the world”.

SEI Research Director Måns Nilsson said, “While rankings are always a bit unpredictable, this stable upward trend suggests that our approach to research is succeeding: combining a solid, in-house science base with informed and considered engagement with decision makers.”

The Stockholm Environment Institute is headquartered in Stockholm, and is also located in the U.S., the U.K., Thailand, Kenya and Estonia.

This is the seventh edition of the Global Go To Think Tanks Report, described as “the insider guide to the global marketplace of ideas”. The report was launched on 22 January, 2014, at a press conference in Washington DC, hosted by the World Bank.
