A new animated short film aims to promote discussion on the future of agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region. The film Farming for sustainable futures — a Baltic tale is the fruit of research carried out under the EU-funded project Baltic COMPASS.
The Baltic Sea is a common resource for the countries in the Baltic Sea Region. However, agricultural pollution does not respect national borders. Each country depends on the actions of their neighbours to achieve targets for environmental sustainability, human health, economic viability and social equity.
Despite the European ambition of improving regional cohesion, in many cases the countries in the Baltic Sea Region pursue national priorities at the cost of regional sustainability and cooperation. Even within countries, it is challenging to achieve coherence between environmental and agricultural sectors. This situation makes it difficult to find solutions to the complex reality of environmental pollution and agricultural production in the Baltic Sea Region.
“Our vision for this film was to spark discussion around both the issues and the possible solutions for sustainable farming in the Baltic Sea Region,” said Maria Osbeck, SEI researcher and a project leader for Baltic COMPASS.
