Matthew Fielding is Head of Communications, Learning and Impact at Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), where he leads an integrated division working across strategic communications, results reporting, learning, knowledge management and impact. His role focuses on strengthening the pathway from research and engagement to results, learning and communication, helping SEI plan, understand and communicate its contribution to change.

Matthew has over 15 years of experience in environment and sustainable development across five continents, including work in the UK, US, Malaysia, Ghana, Peru, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Thailand and Costa Rica. He has worked as a researcher, project manager and senior leader, contributing to a wide range of research projects and institutional initiatives.

His background in both social and natural sciences enables him to approach sustainable development from a multidisciplinary perspective. His work has covered areas including smallholder agriculture, soil carbon, permafrost and computer vision, maternal health and rural livelihoods, bioeconomy, research-policy engagement, and the relationship between national development strategies and bilateral aid.

Matthew’s senior leadership experience includes serving as Head of Operations for SEI Asia and leading the development of SEI’s communications and impact function. He currently serves on the Executive Team (ET) and the Global Management Committee (GMC) and is the Chair of the HQ Operations Committee. He is particularly interested in how research organizations can strengthen their systems, teams and ways of working to increase their relevance, learning and contribution to real-world change.

In addition to his professional work, Matthew is passionate about mentoring young professionals.
