Human technological evolution can be understood through three major paradigms: the transformation of materials, the transformation of energy, and the transformation of information. The authors lay out the history of the first two, and describe how today, we stand at the cusp of an era defined by the transformation of information. They call for a “global commons” approach to navigating this “disjoint in time”, where decisions over the mechanisms that have always governed major technological transitions — transmission, storage and processing, whether for materials, energy and now information — must take into account human and environmental concerns, perhaps in ways that have not been considered in previous transformations.
