The key objective of the meeting is to adopt the implementation guidelines of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
The guidelines, known as the Paris Rulebook, are intended to ensure implementation, and increase ambition, of climate action so that the central goal of the Paris Agreement can be achieved, namely to hold the global average temperature to as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Another key focus of this year’s UN climate negotiations is ensuring a “just transition” away from fossil fuels. The Polish COP presidency has highlighted just transitions as one of the key issues for COP 24, and it’s a topic that will be on the mind of many conference attendees.
COP24 will also host the high-level political phase of the Talanoa Dialogue, which aims to assess progress towards the temperature goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. SEI’s Michael Lazarus will represent SEI as one of 12 civil society members participating in the Ministerial-level Dialogue on 11 December; he will speak about how to align fossil fuel production with the Paris Agreement goals.
