Dino Talks: why do we still subsidize fossil fuels?

We Don’t Have Time and United Nations Development Programme hosted a multi-part virtual series called “Dino Talks,” which convened expert panels to discuss various angles on fossil fuels’ entrenchment in our global environment and economy.

The first event, which gave a primer on fossil fuel subsidies, featured SEI Research Fellow Ploy Achakulwisut and her expertise on the subject.

According to the International Monetary Fund, US$11 million per minute is spent on fossil fuel subsidies. This estimate encompasses explicit government support for fossil fuel production and consumption, and implicit subsidies that account for public health and environmental damages of fossil fuel use, such as air pollution and traffic accidents.

We are heading towards a climate disaster, so why do we still subsidize the major cause of this disaster? In this first episode, we discuss the global fossil fuel production gap and the impacts of fossil fuel subsidies. We look at what the money could be spent on instead, hearing from high-level speakers about the global situation and the opportunities that lie ahead if we bring them to a close.
