The Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) is a prestigious international event that brings together bioeconomy leaders from around the world, reflecting the interdisciplinary and diverse nature of the field. For the first time, GBS will be hosted outside Europe, in Nairobi, Kenya. Launched in 2015, GBS was designed to be a global, inclusive summit, uniting experts from all corners of the world to showcase the bioeconomy’s diverse and interdisciplinary features.
GBS2024 is hosted by the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) under the East African Community (EAC), the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe)/BioInnovate Africa, and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
GBS2024 will focus on building resilient and sustainable food systems, positioning the bioeconomy as a model for transitioning to less fossil-dependent economies, conserving biodiversity, and leveraging innovation to create new economic opportunities, particularly for youth employment. The summit serves as a platform for fostering dialogue among diverse stakeholders, promoting the exchange of best practices, and identifying opportunities for global collaboration and innovation.
The GBS fosters dialogue among a wide range of actors to promote the sharing of best practices, identify opportunities for global innovation and collaboration, and gather champions in promoting the bioeconomy concept across disciplines and sectors, especially among policymakers and financiers.
GBS2024 anticipates 500 in-person attendees and over 3000 online participants.
During the summit, SEI, BioInnovate Africa and EASTECO will launch the report The State of the Bioeconomy in Eastern Africa: 2024. This report provides a comprehensive overview of the region’s bioeconomy landscape, mapping out key trends, key actors, challenges, and opportunities for Eastern Africa’s future bio-based development. In parallel, SEI will also unveil a synthesis bioeconomy report and guidebook developed as part of the SEI Bioeconomy Initiative.
These reports reflect SEI’s mission to promote evidence-based policies and strategies for advancing bioeconomy in the Global South, offering crucial tools for governments and institutions in Eastern Africa to navigate the path toward sustainable development.
