SEI at Adaptation Futures 2025

Adaptation Futures 2025 brought together leading voices from research, policy, civil society and the arts to explore and accelerate action on climate adaptation. SEI research experts contributed to a wide range of sessions, from creative workshops to expert panels and knowledge-sharing dialogues.

13 to 16 October 2025
Christchurch, New Zealand and Online

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre

The 8th international Adaptation Futures Conference (AF2025) is hosted by the University of Canterbury in partnership with the World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP).  As the flagship global event on climate change adaptation, it brings together practitioners, researchers, policymakers, community leaders and communicators from across the world to network, co-create, learn and accelerate adaptation action.

SEI’s participation in AF2025 will span interactive panels, workshops, side events, storytelling sessions and knowledge co-production formats. The contributions will especially focus on bridging science and practice, emphasizing inclusive approaches, Indigenous knowledge, creative engagement and enhancing enabling conditions for adaptation (such as finance, justice and cross-sector collaboration).

Networking event: The International Network of Boundary Organizations on Adaptation (INBOA)

As boundary organizations continue to bridge the gap between climate knowledge and action, this event offered a unique opportunity for connection and mutual learning. Participants was introduced to INBOA’s mission and network, exchange experiences, and build new partnerships to strengthen climate adaptation at all scales.

Panel discussion

  • Åsa Gerger Swartling, SEI Head of Division – Societies, Climate and Policy Support (Chair)
  • Alaine Bourke, Consortium on Regional Climatology and Adaptation to Climate Change (Ouranos), Canada
  • Marta Olazabal, Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Spain
  • Marco Billi, University of Chile, Chile
  • Roger Street, University of Oxford, UK and CMCC, Italy (Moderator)

Poster presentation: Operationalizing epistemic (in)justice in climate change adaptation

Part of the AdaptationAGORA project, this poster presents a framework and metrics to evaluate epistemic injustice in knowledge co-production on adaptation. The framework is structured around four impact pathways: relevant knowledge, just participation, sustained relationships and mutual learning. Each pathway has associated metrics for activities, outcomes and impacts. It supports inclusive, accountable, and trust-based engagement in adaptation processes.
