One of the most significant outcomes of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment was the recommendation to create a UN environmental organisation. This paved the way for the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Since then, UNEP has served as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator, leading discussions and sponsoring research on sustainable development and environmental protection. It works with a wide range of partners, including, on several projects, SEI.

In a small-group discussion with SEI and SRC researchers, Steiner argued that there is a need to “shorten the distance between science and policy”. He also called for embedding the “green economy” into the sustainable-development dialogue, and he urged his audience not to give up hope yet on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, being held in Rio de Janeiro in late June.

“Give Rio a chance until the last day it is over”, he said.

The video also includes brief presentations by SEI researchers Åsa Persson and Francis Johnson , as well as the ensuing conversation. For a different perspective on the event, see a blogpost by SEI intern Johan Westberg .
