To advance the green transition of the semiconductor industry, SEI and SEMI Europe have signed three-year partnership agreement, with SEI serving as a knowledge partner to support sustainable innovation and practices across the sector.
As demand for electronics surges worldwide, the semiconductor industry faces growing pressure to address its environmental footprint. Semiconductor manufacturing is resource-intensive, requiring substantial amounts of energy and water, and contributes significantly to carbon emissions. Driving sustainability in this critical sector is essential for achieving broader climate and environmental goals.
SEMI Europe is an international industry association representing over 3000 members across the electronics and semiconductor sectors. It is committed to advancing the green transition of the semiconductor industry by helping its members adopt more sustainable practices. To support this effort, SEMI Europe develops roadmaps and standards focused on energy conservation, water circularity, and operational improvements in facilities and fabs.
The new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a framework for cooperation and knowledge sharing on some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. These include pollution, climate change, decarbonization, and the sustainable development of the semiconductor industry, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key areas of cooperation under the MoU include:
“Our strategic collaboration with Stockholm Environment Institute is a key step in driving sustainability across the semiconductor value chain,” said Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe. “By combining SEMI Europe’s industry leadership with SEI’s research expertise, we support the EU’s goal of climate neutrality through climate action, circularity and responsible innovation.”
“The partnership with SEMI Europe, with over 3000 members, has great potential to be impactful and accelerate implementation of the green transition in the electronics and semiconductor industry” said Måns Nilsson, SEI Executive Director.
This collaboration marks a significant step in aligning industry growth with global environmental goals, supporting a resilient and sustainable future for the semiconductor sector.
