Internship

Agreement-making in the Sámi homeland

Join SEI HQ’s Rights and Equity team as an intern and support analysis of environmental licences of large industry projects in Sápmi (the Sámi homeland), including wind power and mining. Contribute to impactful research that shapes Swedish governance of land and resources in the north.

Location

Stockholm, Sweden

Deadline

1 November 2026

Contract details

Six months (January to June 2027)

In the Formas-funded project “Agreement-making in the Sámi homeland: Investigating an emerging tool in green transition governance”, we are searching for an intern to support our analysis of environmental licences. The aim of the project is to investigate negotiated agreements between Sámi reindeer herding communities and industries, such as wind power and mining companies. One part of the research involves comparing outcomes in these agreements with the decisions from Swedish courts and government agencies.

The internship consists of two tasks and includes contact with both courts and government agencies:

  • To identify and collect licence decisions, creating a database
  • To analyse the decisions and contribute to a research paper

The successful candidate will develop both practical and analytical skills, gaining knowledge of Swedish land-use planning and the issues facing Sámi reindeer herding.

Who you are

We are looking for a person who is studying environmental or administrative law, political science or similar. You are skilled in qualitative methodologies, with the ability to review and summarize documents, and handle and organize a large dataset, for example in Excel. You are committed to working in a collaborative environment and have a natural ability to coordinate and drive tasks forward.

Skills and experience

  • Student currently undertaking a master’s program in law or political science
  • Fluency in both Swedish and English
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
