Project

Establishing air pollution as a key topic across private sector and enabling entities

Supported by the Clean Air Fund, this project from SEI at the University of York helps companies quantify, report, and reduce air pollutant emissions across their value chain. It provides the tools and guidance companies need to take meaningful action toward mitigating air pollutant emissions.

Active project

2025–2027

Many companies still do not quantify or report their air pollutant emissions. This can be due to barriers, including the lack of data, skills, and clear rules. Others face high costs for cleaner technologies or do not see air quality as part of their sustainability work. These challenges are even harder for companies in the Global South, where regulations and resources can be limited.

To address this, SEI works closely with the Alliance for Clean Air (ACA) and other partners to help companies measure their air pollutant emissions, build inventories, create scenarios for reducing pollution, and plan actions they can take across their operations. SEI is working with partners to make it easier for companies to measure, report, and reduce their air pollution.

Action

  • Provide technical support to ACA members to plan and report on their air pollution actions.
  • Provide technical expertise to businesses that are part of the UN’s Global Compact on air pollution reporting.
  • Collaborate with private sector entities to integrate air pollution into their guidance, frameworks, and standards, serving as a liaison and providing technical input as needed.
  • Leverage on existing private sector networks to increase corporate engagement on air quality, targeting industries like semiconductor, aluminium, rare earths, and shipping.
  • Develop sector-specific guidance on air pollution’s environmental impact to support companies’ transition plans and reporting.
  • Conduct a feasibility study on tools to assess private sector air pollution’s health impacts and align them with WHO guidelines.

As a result of these activities, it is expected that air quality will be institutionalized within the UN Global Compact, increasing corporate awareness of air pollution as a material issue. Also, companies will be able to demonstrate improved capacity to measure, report, and reduce emissions across their value chains, strengthening global cooperation and leadership.

Working with ACA, its members will be able to complete public air quality or  Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) reports and report publicly on their air quality efforts.
