The Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat, an EU initiative, supports over 2,200 inhabited European islands in transitioning to renewable energy. Despite access to renewable sources like wind and wave energy, many islands rely on costly fossil fuel imports. The initiative offers technical guidance, shares best practices, and aids in decarbonization planning, aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2030. During its third phase, it provides three years of technical support to 30 islands. SEI is the regional partner for Sweden and supports the transition to renewables for the two big islands of Gotland and Öland, as well as a group of smaller islands (Ven, Visingsö, Vinön, Holmön).
Funding by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER). The initiative builds on a political declaration, and a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2020 by the Commission and 14 EU countries with large island populations: Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
The secretariat is managed by 3E, Th!nk E, Steinbeis 2i, Econoler, DAFNI, RdA and Samsø Energy Academy.
In total 11 regional partners support the work of the secretariat, one of them being SEI.
