Climate justice in an ageing world

Climate change has a profound impact on the health, wellbeing, and livelihoods of older people globally. Despite its growing significance as the world’s population ages, this issue frequently remains overlooked in climate change discussions. To address this gap, SEI launched the Global Ageing and Climate Change Regional Dialogues webinar series to explore regional policies, practices, and challenges at the intersection of global ageing and climate change.

2024

The world is undergoing a significant demographic shift as the global population ages—a change highlighted by the 2018 milestone where the number of people over 65 surpassed those under five worldwide. Despite the considerable risks climate change poses to the health, wellbeing, and livelihoods of older persons, this ageing phenomenon is often overlooked in climate discussions.

To bridge this gap, SEI and HelpAge International launched the Global Ageing and Climate Change Regional Dialogues. This initiative, stemming from the findings of the Climate Justice in an Ageing World Report prepared for COP28, focused on the unique impacts of climate change on older individuals, particularly in lower and middle-income countries.

Scheduled between May and November 2024, the dialogues covered the following regions:

  • Asia and the Pacific
  • Africa
  • Eurasia and the Middle East
  • Latin America and the Caribbean

The webinar series aimed to catalyze action, increase awareness of the intersection between global aging and climate change, and develop policies tailored to the challenges of ageing in a changing climate.
