In a Daily Nation Opinion, SEI Researcher Cassilde Muhoza explains why Kenya’s expansion of renewable energy has not automatically translated into lower tariffs.
Kenya has achieved what few countries in the world have managed: building a power system anchored in renewable energy. Geothermal, wind and hydropower now form the backbone of the national grid.
Yet for many Kenyan households and manufacturers, this green transition has not translated into lower electricity bills, greater equity or meaningful poverty reduction.
“Recent research by SEI highlights persistent disconnects between climate action, energy planning and equity goals,” Cassilde writes in the Daily Nation.
