Momentum for Target 16: enhancing collective action to reduce the global footprint of consumption equitably

SEI York is co-organizing a COP16 side event in the Blue Zone, addressing critical questions on how to reduce overconsumption in an equitable way. The session will draw on research and practice from SEI and other experts, exploring strategies to achieve the Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 16, which focuses on the global consumption footprint.

During this session, we will explore critical challenges and opportunities in addressing overconsumption. The discussion will cover:

  • Challenges and solutions: What are the main obstacles that hinder global efforts to reduce overconsumption, and how can they be overcome? Experts from various sectors will share insights on how policies, business practices, and individual behaviors can be adjusted to meet these goals.
  • Government and business actions: What specific steps can governments and companies take, both at COP16 and beyond, to lead the way in reducing the global footprint of consumption? We’ll hear from organizations that are already making strides in this area, offering case studies and success stories.
  • Setting and measuring targets: How can we effectively set targets for reducing consumption footprints, and what metrics can be used to track progress? Panelists will provide perspectives from science, policy, business, and agriculture on the best ways to ensure that progress toward Target 16 is both measurable and meaningful.

This session will not only highlight ongoing efforts but also foster dialogue on future collaborations. Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with panelists during a dedicated Q&A segment. To maximize the impact of the session, the discussion will emphasize the need for collective action, uniting governments, businesses, civil society, and consumers to work together in addressing this pressing global issue.
