Science Day 2026 at the HLPF: The science-policy imperative in the final stretch to 2030 and beyond

Building on the 2023-2025 editions, Science Day 2026 convenes the science community, policy-makers, and societal actors at a critical juncture for multilateral cooperation.

9 July 2026
New York City, United States

As the 2030 Agenda enters its final implementation phase, Science Day provides a focused space to examine how scientific knowledge is being used within multilateral processes to accelerate delivery, where it is falling short, and what is required for science-policy collaboration to remain credible and effective under current global conditions.

About Science Day

Since 2023, Science Day has provided a dedicated space at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) for scientists, policy-makers, UN entities, and societal actors to engage directly on the role of science in advancing sustainable development.

As the 2030 Agenda enters its final implementation phase, Science Day 2026 takes place at a critical moment for multilateral cooperation. Expectations for collective action are rising, while the global context is becoming more complex, fragmented, and resource-constrained.

In this context, science is increasingly called upon to inform policy choices, support implementation, and help navigate uncertainty. At the same time, science itself depends on effective multilateral cooperation to remain credible, inclusive, and impactful at scale.

Science Day 2026 focuses on how science and multilateral cooperation work together in practice under pressure – where this partnership is enabling progress, where it is falling short, and what must be strengthened to accelerate delivery in the final stretch to 2030.

Looking ahead, the event also considers how science-policy collaboration can help shape the foundations for sustainable development beyond 2030, ensuring that the systems, relationships, and institutions we rely on today remain fit for the challenges to come.

Objectives and focus areas

Science Day 2026 focuses on the practical role of science in accelerating SDG delivery and strengthening multilateral cooperation under current global conditions.

The event will concentrate on:

  • Identifying where progress is stalling: Examining where and why progress on the SDGs is lagging, and how knowledge gaps, capacity constraints, and institutional challenges are limiting implementation.
  • Accelerating impact through science: Highlighting where scientific knowledge is already helping to deliver results, while remaining clear-eyed about its limits and the conditions needed for it to be more effective.
  • Strengthening science-policy interfaces: Exploring how evidence is translated into action, and what improvements are needed in how science is communicated, funded, and integrated into decision-making processes.
  • Scaling what works: Showcasing technical, institutional, and policy innovations that strengthen science-policy collaboration and can be applied across contexts.
  • Adapting for 2030 and beyond: Considering how science-policy partnerships must evolve to sustain momentum through 2030 and support how sustainable development will be advanced in the years ahead.

Format and approach

Science Day 2026 is designed as a high-level, interactive dialogue that brings together diverse perspectives while maintaining a strong focus on practical insights and real-world experience.

The programme will feature:

  • Short expert interventions and case-based insights
  • Moderated discussions and fireside-style conversations
  • Opportunities for audience engagement, both in the room and online

The event prioritizes exchange over presentation, creating space for meaningful dialogue between scientific, policy, and practitioner communities.
