The United Nations Ocean Conference takes place on 9–13 June 2025 in Nice, France, to halt the decline of the ocean, the planet’s largest ecosystem. The scientific community plays an important role, and SEI will be actively participating.
Here you can learn more about SEI’s activities and messages.

The UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, aims to accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. The conference is preceded by the One Ocean Science Congress on 3–6 June which provides comprehensive scientific insights to support evidence-based decision-making.
SEI will contribute to both the UN Ocean Conference and the One Ocean Science Congress to advance discussions on sustainable ocean governance, science-policy integration and local resilience. In particular, we will share insights related to ocean governance, coastal resilience and marine pollution.
On 12 June, SEI will organize a half-day session, Seas of Change, consisting of two side events and a mingle. The session will help us build a global coastal resilience community of practice. Connect with us to learn more or get involved.
Join us for a morning of coffee, croissants and coastal solutions! On 12 June we will organize an open meeting between 9:00–12:00 CEST with a series of interesting expert dialogues on how to build coastal resilience and tackle marine pollution. The half-day consists of three consecutive events; you can join all three or pick one:

Charlotte Wagner, researcher at SEI US, will participate in the One Ocean Science Congress, presenting the poster “Advancing research and policy engagement to mitigate pollution threats to small-scale fisheries for sustainable food security“.
Her presentation will focus on how the essential role small-scale fisheries play for global food security, especially in low- and lower-middle-income countries. However, ocean pollution – from chemicals, plastics and other contaminants – poses an increasingly urgent threat to these fisheries and the health of communities that rely on them.
Unfortunately, research on this topic remains limited and Charlotte Wagner will highlight research gaps, calling for transdisciplinary approaches to measure and address pollution in small-scale fishery communities.
Presenter: Charlotte Wagner
Time: 5 June 18:00–20:00 CEST.
Venue: Poster area “La Baleine” | P492.
On 12 June, SEI will organize two side events on important ocean topics. Join us between 9:00–12:00 at the Théâtre L’Alphabet, 19, Rue de Lille, Nice.
How can the Blue Economy contribute to coastal resilience? This will be discussed by diverse actors with innovative ideas on how to mobilize finance. Topics include the future of blue carbon financing, investment in nature-based solutions and how blue bonds can move from the national level to the global.
Will 2025 be a breakthrough year in the attempts to tackle marine pollution? In this event you will meet leading experts on policy processes and innovation who explore important emerging trends. We will discuss the negotiations on a global plastics treaty, the implementation of the Global Framework on Chemicals and explore new governance tools and innovation to tackle pollution from source to sea and accelerate river cleanups.
16:00–17:15, (venue TBC), Karina Barquet moderates a session at “Blue solutions: leveraging existing innovations for conserving and sustainably managing our ocean and coasts using circular solutions and ocean energy.”
12:15–13:30, in Room 4: Karina Barquet is a panellist in the session “Island waterscapes: where freshwater currents meet ocean resilience.”
