On Wednesday, May 22nd the Global Assessment Report 2013 is a featured event. The Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction is the UN flagship publication on global disaster risk and disaster risk management.  A group of SEI researchers (Åse Johannessen, Arno Rosemarin, Åsa Gerger Swartling, Guoyi Han, Gregor Vulturius, and Thor Axel Stenström) wrote a background paper for the Global Assesment Report 2013 on how investment decisions can be linked within Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

“Our key question for this background paper was ‘what are the key social learning barriers and opportunities for private and public partners to boost DRR in WASH?’”, write the authors.

The Role of Ecosystems in Disaster Risk Reduction, a new book that provides an overview of knowledge and practice in the multidisciplinary field of ecosystem management and DRR, was launched on Monday, May 20th. SEI water and sanitation expert Madeleine Fogde co-authored the chapter on the role of capacity development in disaster risk reduction aiming for a sustainable water supply and sanitation.

Also on Monday, at a consultaion meeting of Mayors and Local Governments, SEI researcher Åse Johannessen presented the analysis SEI has done for UNISDR on the self-assessments of local governments on their progress towards disaster risk reduction in the campaign Making Cities Resilient.
