In 2023, Guatemala became a State Partner of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), joining a global effort to reduce short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) such as methane, black carbon, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). By endorsing the CCAC Framework and its Strategy 2030, Guatemala has committed to advancing integrated action across key sectors, including agriculture, waste, transport, and heavy-duty vehicles.
To support this commitment, SEI, CCAC, and Guatemala’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) will collaborate to develop a national SLCP plan. This collaboration will focus on advancing integrated action across priority sectors, with broad agreement among government institutions responsible for implementation.
The project will concentrate on the following core areas:
This initiative builds on more than 15 years of SEI’s work supporting over 25 countries in strengthening action to reduce SLCP emissions. It draws particularly on experience from Latin America, where countries have demonstrated leadership in integrating SLCPs into national planning and decision-making processes, including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National SLCP Plans, and air quality strategies.
