The book Science, Research and Innovation for Harnessing the Blue Economy synthesizes some of the academic presentations made during the Science and Research Symposium of the first ever Blue Economy Conference (SBEC) which was held in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on 26–28 November 2018. The book, organized into three sections with nine chapters and four annexes, has chapters that have been designed to capture some – but not all – of the output of the presentations, made at the symposium.

The Science and Research Symposium was one of the ten signature events of the Global Sustainable Blue Economy Conference (SBEC). Those participating in this segment of the conference were primarily from national (Kenyan) and international academic research institutions, international and regional organizations, United Nations agencies and development partners, industry representatives and the private sector, NGOs, and civil society organizations. The main objective of the symposium was to function as a forum for scholars and researchers to debate and share ideas on the complex scientific issues surrounding the blue economy.
