Oil and gas-related air pollution cause over 91 000 premature deaths in the US every year, along with hundreds and thousands of health complications, according to a new journal article in Science Advances co-authored by Ploy Achakulwisut, who was an SEI researcher while working on the study.

The Guardian joined other news outlets from throughout the world in reporting the findings, which are the first to examine the health impacts – and unequal health burdens across ethnicities and locations – caused by every stage of the oil and gas supply chain, from exploration to end use.

This study, co-authored with researchers from University College London, George Washington University and University of Colorado Boulder, found that marginalized ethnic groups bear the brunt of oil and gas pollution-induced health impacts. Additionally, the states of California, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are impacted the most, while the per-capita incidences are highest in New Jersey, Washington, DC, New York, California and Maryland.

These findings were also reported in media outlets across the US and the world, including the Los Angeles times, The Hill, Forbes, and Spanish-language publications such as Forbes México and La República (Spain).
