A summer of extreme weather events around the world has pushed climate change high up the political and public agendas. SEI is proud to be a core partner in a new Stockholm-based climate security hub being launched at World Water Week, as well as leading a discussion on the important role of sanitation in meeting the Paris Agreement targets.

A new hub for research into the security implications of climate change will be launched on Thursday. The new Stockholm Climate Security Hub is an initiative of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and will build on cooperation between four globally respected Swedish think-tanks: Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University (SRC), and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Speakers at the launch will include Mr. Hassan Janabi, Minister of Water Resources in Iraq, Inger Buxton, Deputy Head of the Department of Global Agenda at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and Karl Hallding, Research Leader on the Global Research Committee at Stockholm Environment Institute. The launch event will be open to the public.
The Stockholm Climate Security Hub’s overall aim is to cooperate on research and analysis on climate security and to communicate the latest knowledge in the field. The transdisciplinary research programme Mistra Geopolitics, which includes SEI and SIPRI, has already started to link climate and environmental research with geopolitics and will also contribute. The Hub aims to provide evidence-based support to policy-makers, including the United Nations and other international organizations.
The launch of the Stockholm Climate Security Hub is a milestone in Sweden’s ongoing efforts to push climate security on the international agenda. It follows the first UN Security Council debate on climate security in seven years, which took place under the Swedish Security Council presidency in July this year.

Climate change is expected to further complicate the already difficult challenge of providing safe, functioning water and sanitation services to all, and even to threaten past achievements as systems are stretched to breaking point by extreme weather and new climatic conditions. At the same time, the current patchy water, sanitation and hygiene coverage is responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as major public health and pollution problems.
New technologies and management approaches have made possible more sustainable, equitable, climate-friendly and climate-resilient water, sanitation and waste management. This World Water Week session will explore the potential synergies between better sanitation and the Paris Agreement targets, and how they can be realized.
