World Ocean Day 2026

World Ocean Day serves as a reminder of the importance of the ocean. Learn more about the role it plays for climate resilience, biodiversity, food security, geopolitics and many other topics.

“The ocean opportunity gap” has become a key phrase to describe the hope that is often pinned to the ocean. New research, from SEI and other institutions, shows that marine and coastal innovation can help societies improve energy production, food security, disaster risk reduction and local livelihoods.

Yet in parallel, the ocean’s ability to perform these services is declining, due to climate change, pollution and the impact of human activities. Ahead of the biodiversity meeting COP17 in October, countries are therefore expected to demonstrate how they will ramp up protection of the ocean and expand Marine Protected Areas, which is also the theme of this year’s World Ocean Day.

To make matters even more complicated, this unfolds at a time when the ocean is increasingly contested – geopolitically, ecologically, and economically. SEI’s research spans many of these fast-evolving fields – here you can learn about some of our ocean-related research.
