The scope for agroecology to support integrated implementation of the three Rio Conventions through food system transformation

This hybrid event aims to explore the evidence base for agroecology providing an integrating function in strengthening implementation of the three Rio Conventions through food system transformation and grassroots experience of this contributing to achieving prosperity for all while maintaining a healthy planet.

The event will take place in person at SEI in Stockholm, Sweden and ICRAF in Nairobi, Kenya, as well as global virtual participation with co-hosts including SIANI, SLU and UNEP on 30 May.

This event reflects on the urgent need for actions to achieve a healthy planet and prosperity of all by exploring:

  • the evidence base for agroecology’s ability to contribute to reconciling reaching human and societal well-being thresholds while avoiding an overshoot of planetary boundaries
  • progress with integrated implementation of the three Rio Conventions through food system transformation, building on the recognition of the need for this that emerged from the UN Food Systems Summit in 2021 and development of recommendations to accelerate implementation actions
  • grassroot experiences of how farmers and other food system actors operate in an integrated way to reconcile food production with biodiversity, the promotion of ecosystem services, inclusion of local communities and supporting restoration rather further degradation of land and water resources in a climate change context.

The event also looks into accelerating the implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development since agroecological approaches promote resilience and focus on agency of all actors along food value chains. In addition, it will contribute to ongoing discussions on sustainable and inclusive recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. This is now more urgent in the face of sharply rising food and fertilizer prices resulting from the conflict in Ukraine which, combined with an increased frequency of climate extreme events, threatens to reverse progress in implementing policies to transform food systems.

Please note that there are limits for physical participation in Stockholm and Nairobi, but this is complemented by unrestricted web access.
