Almedalsveckan (Almedalen Week) is an annual political event held in Visby, Sweden, where politicians, stakeholders and the public gather for speeches, seminars and discussions. In September 2026, Swedish elections will take place and this election year, over 3 100 public events will occur during the Almedalen Week.
SEI will contribute its research expertise to nine high-level seminars, dialogues and roundtable meetings in close collaboration with partners and funders.

On Tuesday, Björn Nykvist, Head of Division – Global Agendas, Climate, and Systems, will speak at a high-level event organised by the EU Commission in Sweden with several MEPs represented. Per Andersson, Head of the LeadIT Secretariat will speak at a high-level event focusing on how India and Sweden jointly can shape pathways for climate action and economic growth organised by Engaging India at Almedalen.
On Wednesday, SEI, in collaboration with the Haga Initiative, is organising a high-level event about security and climate preparedness in Sweden’s and EU’s ports. Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Governor of Gotland County, will hold a keynote speech, followed by Annika Markovic, SEI Engagement Director and Karina Barquet, Team Leader of SEI’s Water, Coasts and Ocean research team, who will present SEI’s research on climate and security preparedness.
On Thursday at the Baltic Sea Days (Östersjödagarna), Security and cooperation in the Baltic Sea will be discussed with Ambassador Karolina Ostrzyniewska at the Embassy of Poland to Sweden, Johan Norlén, Chief of the Swedish Navy, Swedish Armed Forces and Lena Lindgren Schelin, Director General of the Swedish Coast Guard, moderated by SEI’s Karina Barquet.
During the week, Karin André and Ylva Rylander will engage in events on sustainable consumption and production, showcasing Trase – Intelligence for Sustainable Trade, the EU-funded C-SINK Project, and demonstrate SEI’s Consumption Compass 2.0 to Swedish municipalities, funders and relevant policy actors.
Representatives for Sweden’s political parties will hold daily speeches from the Almedalen valley at 12:00 and 19:00 from Monday 22 June to Friday 26 June.

The Baltic Sea meet-up and fika Östersjön ombord – on board the ferry M/S Gotland leaving Nynäshamn 14.30 to Visby in Gotland – will gather researchers, stakeholders and journalists. SEI’s Karina Barquet and many researchers from the project Mistra Co-Creating Better Blue (C2B2) will share new insights on topics related to the Baltic Sea.

Sweden’s ports play an important role in the country’s transport, economy and preparedness. It is important that port regions increase their knowledge of how they may be affected by climate change and strengthen their ability to take into account new societal changes and geopolitical threats.
This high-level seminar about security and climate preparedness in Sweden’s and EU’s ports is organised by SEI in close collaboration with the Haga Initiative. A panel dialogue will follow with representatives from Axfood, Stena Recycling and Övik Energi, moderated by Nina Ekelund, Chairman at the Haga Initiative.
The European Commission adopted two strategies to promote competitiveness, sustainability, safety and resilience in the EU’s waterborne sector in March 2026. These strategies focus primarily on ports, shipping and shipbuilding – crucial sectors for the EU’s trade, economic growth, security and defence.
