Strengthening the climate adaptation and resilience capabilities of local communities in Putumayo, Colombia

Climate change adaptation is a crucial and urgent process globally, especially for rural communities. Extreme hydrometeorological phenomena and other hazards, such as landslides, represent a serious risk to people’s lives and livelihoods in both rural and urban areas. In the Putumayo department of Colombia, communities face climate-related hazards such as floods, strong winds, forest fires, and droughts.

The development of community climate adaptation plans is essential for increasing these communities’ resilience, helping them mitigate the adverse effects, and preventing material and human losses. Through a codesign process, SEI supports the UICN’s work with two civil society organizations in the municipality of Puerto Asís, Putumayo. This collaboration aims to strengthen their adaptation capabilities, fostering a safer and more sustainable future for all.

This initiative is part of the “Redes Amazónicas en acción” project, focused on axis 4 of the Leticia Pact Action Plan, whose objective is to achieve the empowerment of women and indigenous peoples, and was created as part of the Euroclima program, financed by the European Union, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with the support of the Ministries of Environment of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
