This brief examines how issues related to food security, sustainable agriculture and nutrition have been dealt with so far in the process of defining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The SDGs will define the global development agenda after the deadline for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015. The MDGs address food security in Goal 1: Eradicate
extreme poverty and hunger, and cover other issues relevant to agriculture and rural development in Goals 7 and 8, on environmental sustainability and a global partnership for development. However, they do not specifically address agriculture.
Within the SDG process, general consensus has emerged on the objectives of a Goal for sustainable agriculture and food security: increasing productivity while ensuring efficient use of resources. Reviewing 18 documents by, among others, the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, this brief explores progress in covering food security, sustainable agriculture and nutrition in the SDGs, the remaining gaps and the role that SIANI could play in filling them.
