The inclusion of SEI in this prestigious Athletics Kenya program is a testament to the growing recognition of the link between environmental health and sports performance.

These activities are part of the Clean Air for Enhanced Urban Climate Resilience in African Cities’ project. The project aims to promote cleaner air and a pollution-free environment, particularly in sports venues and surrounding areas. Since 2021, SEI and UNEP have been partners of Athletics Kenya in meeting its sustainability goals, contributing significantly to cleaner air during sporting events.

Key achievements highlighted in the program include:

  • Installation of air quality monitoring systems in 13 stadiums and sports facilities across 10 countries in Africa;
  • Capacity building and awareness about air quality;
  • Partnership in promoting environmental sustainability in sports; and
  • Engagement at the 2024 Adidas Stockholm Marathon.

SEI and UNEP believe that by making air quality data accessible and raising awareness, athletes, organizers, and fans can become powerful advocates for environmental change. This feature in the Athletics Kenya program amplifies our message and underscores the collective responsibility to safeguard our planet for future generations.
