The course will contribute to a better understanding of the current pressures on the region’s natural resource base related to food systems and the options to minimize these pressures while improving food system outcomes (food affordability, food safety, health, and rural livelihoods).

In particular, the MOOC will provide the latest scientific information in a simple and powerful way to help audiences understand:

  • The value of using a food systems approach for improved management of natural resources;
  • Complex dynamics within food system activities, actors and outcomes and their implications for natural resource use;
  • Options for sustainable and efficient use in food systems;
  • Policy options to trigger effective change at different points of intervention in the system.

The Food MOOC will also illustrate the links between efficiency improvements in food systems and impact on livelihoods, addressing some cross-cutting policy-relevant issues such as gender, employment, and education. The course may also provide lessons learned from other regions on how to reach more sustainable pathways.
