Unsustainable consumption patterns are a major driver of global greenhouse gas emissions. Shifting to more sustainable consumption is essential not only for tackling the climate crisis but also for promoting global equity and improving quality of life. In Sweden, municipalities have a key role and are well positioned to influence local consumption patterns.
The Sustainable Avesta project builds on the insights from the pilot study “Reduced consumption-based climate emissions and equal living conditions [Add link]”. It aims to translate findings into practice by developing and testing methods and approaches for how Avesta and other municipalities can work together with households and other local actors to reduce consumption-based emissions while improving residents’ quality of life.
The project zooms in on and work closely with households in three residential areas – a rural community, a central city neighborhood, and a suburb district – to ensure that the measures are anchored in the local and place specific context, reflecting the needs of the people living in these areas.
Further, the project will establish an arena for dialogue and knowledge sharing between the municipality, households, business and other local actors. The arena will facilitate the exchange of different perspectives, spreading of good ideas and generation of new ones to help the municipality transition towards sustainability. Knowledge and methods developed and tested
The project is led by Avesta Municipality and implemented in partnership with Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.
