SEI at Climate Week NYC 2024

Hosted by the  Climate Group, an international non-profit committed to advancing climate action, Climate Week NYC unites key stakeholders from government, business, and civil society to tackle the climate crisis. The theme for 2024, “It’s Time,” underscores the urgent need for climate action and breaking down barriers to progress.

Simultaneously, the UN Summit of the Future is taking place in New York from 20-23 September, along with the  UN Science Summit spanning 10-27 September 2024.

22 to 29 September 2024
New York, United States

SEI’s Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) is hosting two events on global leadership and accelerating the transition to net zero concrete and cement. LeadIT gathers countries and companies that are committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions from industry by 2050.

SEI experts will also participate as speakers, panellists and delegates at over 20 partner events across Climate Week NYC. They will discuss connected topics such as energy, industry, nature, policy, sustainable living, and transport, all of which underpin our multidisciplinary approach to climate solutions.

The path to a net-zero industry: how global leadership and collaboration can accelerate the industry transition

This event will bring together leaders from heavy industry sectors, governments, and multilateral institutions to discuss successful approaches towards enabling and accelerating industry decarbonization, ways in which such approaches can be diffused and scaled, as well as persistent bottlenecks. It will focus on the crucial role of business, public-private, and cross-geography partnerships, as well as on the unique challenges and opportunities for industry decarbonization in emerging economies.  Closing remarks will be provided by Benjamin Dousa, Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Trade and International Development Cooperation, and Tanmaya Lal, India’s Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs.

The business case for clean air: leveraging climate, health and commercial strategies

Invite only roundtable

  • Time: 10:15-11:45
  • Location: Goals House
  • Hosted by: Clean Air Fund

This roundtable event brought together a range of stakeholders from across business, academia and philanthropy to discus the intersection between climate and health for businesses and the impact on commercial activities and strategies.

Eleni, together with representatives from the Inter IKEA Group, shared their collaborative work producing the Practical Guide For Business: Air Pollutant Emission Assessment, which was adopted by the World Economic Forum’s Alliance for Clean Air in 2022.

The big question deliberated was how can we better communicate the gains and benefits made from reducing air pollution, including how:

  • businesses can become more resilient if their value chains start to incorporate climate action and air pollution into their transition plans;
  • governments can influence air pollution reductions through integrating it into their national determined contributions next year;
  • the right tools, such as our guide, need to be combined into sustainability reporting;
  • regulators have a role to play in implementing legislation for companies to start reporting on air pollution and help level the playing field for businesses;
  • businesses have a role in informing their stakeholders, including consumers, clients and shareholders, on what they are due to gain, rather than lose, from reducing air pollution.

We continue to support the work of the Alliance for Clean Air by providing its members with technical support and strategic guidance in relation to the quantification of their air pollutant emissions, the inclusion of these emissions as part of their ESG/Sustainability (or other) reports, the development of scenarios (business as usual and mitigation), and the development of expected reductions and/or targets for air pollutant emissions.
