Sociobioeconomy and territorial governance in the Amazon: shared commitments for climate- and water-resilient value chains

part of Your guide to SEI at COP30

Climate resilience in the Amazon requires more than protecting ecosystems – it demands an inclusive bioeconomy that benefits local communities, safeguards rights, and shares both the risks and rewards of sustainable production. This side event will explore how integrated value chains and specialty markets rooted in sociobiodiversity can offer viable, climate-compatible development pathways.

13 November 2025

This event will focus on how governance strategies along value chains, when designed with a climate and water lens, can build more just and resilient territories. Rather than focusing solely on territorial or sectoral interventions, we propose a multi-actor approach along the value chain—bringing together communities, companies, investors, and public institutions through shared commitments.

An interactive session will engage participants in exploring four key topics:

  1. Present a governance framework for climate- and water-resilient value chains in the Amazon
  2. Share field experiences on building inclusive, nature-based economies
  3. Highlight tools and partnerships for implementation, monitoring, and investment
  4. Discuss the importance of multi-scalar governance, particularly in water-rich regions like the Amazon

We will showcase real-world cases from the Amazon region that illustrate the importance of:

  • Innovative approaches to value chain promotion or to governance, grounded in local realities but also connecting across scales – from community to basin, national to regional;
  • Multi-stakeholder agreements that align economic, environmental, and social goals;
  • Implementation tools like traceability systems that support climate adaptation and water stewardship.
