Agroecology

Agroecology is a transformative approach to food system change, with the power to confront the interconnected polycrisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and food insecurity. SEI advances agroecology through research, partnerships and policy engagement across sectors and scales.

Agroecology is increasingly recognized as a transformative approach to building resilient, equitable, and sustainable food systems. Today’s global food systems face unprecedented pressures – from climate change and biodiversity loss to social inequities and unsustainable production practices – pushing both people and the planet beyond safe ecological boundaries.

Grounded in the FAO’s 10 Elements of Agroecology and the HLPE’s 13 Principles of Agroecology, agroecology integrates ecological, social, economic, and cultural principles to strengthen synergies across, farms, landscapes and communities. It promotes ecological sustainability, dietary diversity, circular resource use, and co-creation of knowledge with local actors while advancing fairness, connectivity across food chains, and inclusive governance of land and resources.

Agroecology is not only confined to farm-level practices, it reimagines how food is produced, distributed, consumed, and governed for the entire food system. It offers a systemic transformation pathway to enhance resilience, fostering equity, and aligning human well-being with planetary boundaries. Yet its broader adoption remains limited by structural barriers, including entrenched policies, industrialized supply chains, and socio-economic dynamics that favor conventional agriculture.

SEI has made agroecology a growing focus of our work on food system transformation. We bring together expertise across disciplines to conduct research, generate and translate knowledge, engage with stakeholders and co-develop pathways for agroecological transitions. By linking practice with policy, and innovation with governance, SEI seeks to help unlock food systems that are sustainable, inclusive and resilient in the face of global pressures.

Introducing ASAPP

This video introduces SIANI's ASAPP project, highlighting how communities around the world put agroecology principles into practice. Through real-life examples, the project showcases practical solutions to re-imagining food systems that connect people, land and nature.

Case study one: Alnarp

This short video introduces Alnarp’s Farm, the first case study farm from the ASAPP project.
