Citizen Science

Everybody counts: discover how we use, develop and promote participatory approaches to empower communities to protect their health and environment.

Citizen science refers to any activity where researchers partner with members of the public to answer scientific questions. Involving volunteers who are not professional scientists (in the context of the project) can bring significant benefits. Depending on which stages of the research process participants are involved in, it can increase the amount of data collected and help ensure that the research is relevant and the data collected is representative of the situation being explored. Participants can also provide valuable different perspectives on data analysis; improve knowledge mobilization and exchange; and help design effective interventions, generating greater impact. Taking part in research can also offer personal benefits to volunteers.

We use citizen science and other participatory approaches in many of our research projects. We have put together this collection to introduce you to some of the methods and approaches we use and the people using them. Watch our citizen science experts talking about their work and why they choose to use citizen science methods, or read a week in the life of a citizen science researcher to get a flavour of the varied activities that can be involved.

Inclusive Citizen Science, the citizen science research group at our York centre, also undertakes research around the practice of citizen science. Over its 18 year history the group has developed particular interests in increasing the diversity and inclusivity of participants; effective evaluation of citizen science projects; and using digital technologies to support citizen science. The group supports researchers across our other centres, and in other organizations, to use and improve their use of citizen science and other participatory methodologies.

In 2026, the group launched Citizen Science UK — a resource hub for CS researchers and practitioners in the UK.
